A Glimpse of our Journey

The Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship was established in 2010 but the idea of a dedicated school to promote entrepreneurship was the natural outcome of the evolution of the Indian Institute of Technology which began at Kharagpur in 1951. The very definition of Entrepreneurship embodies the aspects of risk and gain – the equilibrium and cognizance of which factors determine the outcome of the success of any venture. Whereas technology is defined as necessarily application of knowledge to create solutions of industrial scale, it becomes important to understand the delivery and management of such solutions.

In the context of a technological and engineering entrepreneurship, the management of technology assumes a great significance so as to optimize competitiveness of institutions and organizations. The successful delivery of a technology to the target consumer depends on the effective management of it. Professor Rajendra Mishra was perceptively addressing this need when he pioneered Management Studies in India at IIT Kharagpur. By bringing together academia and industry at a seat of technological excellence, Professor Mishra helped bridge the gap. This enabled Indian industries to not only tap into the scientific brilliance and innovative solutions for their businesses, but also to bring these solutions successfully to the market.

The Science and Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park (STEP), founded in 1986 with support from the Department of Science and Technology, echoed Prof. Mishra’s lifelong ideals of embracing the best engineering and management practises. Providing the enterprising students of IIT-KGP with a level playing ground, STEP can be seen as the first stride towards a school of engineering entrepreneurship at IIT-KGP. By the new millennium, there was a worldwide explosion of entrepreneurial activities by organizations with primary focus on improving the health, education, and general well-being of individuals and communities. Most of this activity has been undertaken by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or non-profit organizations.

Market actualities have strongly determined the success of a technological model as have creating value for consumers, shareholders and stakeholders in the process. To teach students, academia, future entrepreneurs and businesses the strategies and skillsets required, IIT KGP set up the Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship. In a meeting held on 17th June 2010, the Board of Directors of IIT-KGP decided to set up the School and name it after Professor Mishra, a culmination of the evolution of the IIT KGP cycle. In the seven years of its existence RMSoEE has stimulated and encouraged innovation and enterprise through various initiatives. The Innovation Lab, RMSoEE’s most imaginative facility, was set up to encourage students to work on their projects.

The school offers Academic Programs, Research Programs as well as Entrepreneurship programmes – attracting a wide demographic of prospective students which includes undergraduates completing their masters, research scholars as well as entrepreneurs. The RMSoEE is your academic partner to support innovation and entrepreneurship.
